Do you think I could get this trade:
My Gagne
for
His Vanek

I like the looks of Vanek and Zubrus together, and Vanek has a game in hand on Gagne. Gagne has played well lately, but will tail with no Forsberg IMO.
appreciate any input.

you shouldn't be able to get it but it's worth a try.

what a difference a season makes eh?  at the beginning of this year you'd be all over the idea of trading away Vanek to get Gagne but things looks very much different now.

Agreed. Just a few months later, and values have changed all over the place.

If you can do it, make it so.

You didn't mention whether this was a keeper, so I assume it isn't.

Vanek will outperform Gagne this year and next, but Gagne's production next year won't drop off because of Forsberg's loss as much as, say, Knuble's. Now THERE'S a guy to run away from...

Thanks Guys,

No, not a keeper league. If it was, I think I'd stick with Gagne. I really think Philly has made the right moves to make themselves a lot better over the next 3 seasons. If they can just ditch Hatcher and Rathje they'll be set. Who knows what'll happen with Buffalo next season with Drury and Briere set for free agency. It'll allow teams to key on Afinogenov and Vanek's line.

What kind of value do you think I could get out of Gagne now?
I'm looking at Henrik or Daniel Sedin, possibly Jason Blake. Taking a look at Kariya as well.
Gagne has that intrinsic ability to put the puck in the net, but I'm leaning towards the assists and PPP categories at the moment. Not to mention the fact that Gagne's +/- could plummet any second.

Honestly, I think you'll have a hard time getting any of those guys, or Vanek.

True or not, the perception of Gagne is your problem now, with Forsberg gone. Unless Gagne lights it up in a real hurry (unlikely), his trade value is too tarnished to get the guys you really want. Try a multi-player deal instead.

And I agree: Hatcher and Rathje are human pylons -- they have to go, immediately.
Otherwise it's a decently rebuilding team, probably behind the Capitals, Kings, Bruins and maybe even the Blue Jackets, and on par with the Blues and the Black Hawks. But who knows?
