In a 16 team H2H league, who would you rather have over the next 2 yrs (ie. 2007/08 and 2008/09).

C - Malkin at $20 in yr 1 and $24 in yr 2

or

RW - Radulov $8 in yr 1 and $10 in yr 2

Categories are: G, A, +/-, PIM, PPP, SOG.  Team budgets are fixed at $200.  Team roster is 4C,4RW,4LW,6D,2G +6 bench

I'm thinking Malkin, but $12 could go a long way in getting other talent during the auction.

I'd be giving up Radulov and Jovanovski + a 1st rnd pick (first 16 players are auctioned then last 10 are straight drafted) to receive Malkin and Kubina + 6th rnd pick.

I'm leaning towards acquiring Malkin, but dropping 5 rounds in the draft seems a little painful.  Even though most of our roster is auctioned, we still have to play our first 4 picks in the draft portion (we auction 16, but play 20 positions every week).

looks to me like the other guy is trying to hamstring you.  you have to take on a heftier contract and pay for the privelege?  Rad is going to be a special player and $12 represents about 5% of your budget that could be used to bring in other talent.

im not bothered by paying for talent and there's no doubt that Malkin is talented, more talented than Radulov probably next year anyway, but Rad has some skills too.  i think i'd negotiate him away from the drop in picks.

Malkin is even twice the avg price for starters in a league like this too.  the deal is fine in principle but i'd probably tell the guy that i think he's taking too much advantage and simply offer the player exchange straight up.

Thanks for the insight Ian.  I was a bit wary with the asking price.  I did notice that you said that $20 ($24) would be twice the avg price for a starter in similar leagues.

I tried using the TMR $ values during the auction, but I gave up after a little while.  I guess it would have been interesting to see how solid my roster would have been if I had stuck to the value sheet and waited for some bargains after all the other GM's blew their budgets.  I am in 4th right now, 1pt out of 3rd with a light schedule this week (1 game vs the 3rd place team and 3 against the 14th, 12th and 9th place teams).

The salaries in our league reflect wild speculation, brand name premiums and flat out unbridled testosterone in the auction process.  A few of our ultra-premium salaries are:  Dany Heatley - $45, Joe Thornton - $40, Naslund - $36, Rick Nash - $35, Kovalchuk -$31, Bertuzzi - $31, Iginla - $30.

i didn't use any TMR avg price stuff to come up with that number.  you have a $200 cap and 20 roster spots so the avg starter  would've been $10 to fill your cap.  that is unless i got the parameters all wrong, which is supremely possible

Ah, I see how you got your calculation.  That's a reasonable assumption.  I forgot to mention that since it's a combo-auction/draft, that drafted players all have salaries of $1.  So effectively, we have $190 for 16 roster players = $12($11.875) for avg auction price.

As you pointed out, talented players get bid up so you'd expect elite players to be above that avg and others below it.

The TMR value sheet uses a similar scoring system as our pool, but it does not include SOG and it uses a budget of $260 and only a roster of 20 players for 12 teams...so you would expect higher prices than our pool (due to higher budget and fewer roster slots)...but we have 2 extra teams so scarcity of players might create an inflationary effect.

Anyways, just to compare those salaries in our pool against TMR values for fun:

Heatley - $45 in FHL, $29 in TMR, Thornton - $40FHL, $31TMR, Naslund - $36FHL, $10TMR, Nash $35FHL, $15TMR, Kovalchuk - $31FHL,$21TMR, Bertuzzi - $31FHL, $13TMR, Iginla - $30FHL, $17TMR.
